It's a Wrap
If there's one thing my husband and I ALWAYS do, it is forget to wrap a present until we are about to head out the door.
Colin Cowie, my event planning idol, recommends to keep a shelf in your house with pre-wrapped gifts:
scented candles or wine, to give to the host of the event you are attending, which is a fabulous idea and one that would combat our forgetfulness! My amazing mother Karyn used to do something very similar when my sister and I were attending parties as children, and kept a 'present shelf' in our hall cupboard for such an occasion.
Nowadays, I'm completely inspired by those who go the extra mile and wrap a gift with care and an artistic eye. Makes gift giving even more fun! Here are some inspiring pictures for the next time you have more than five minutes to scribble on a card, from the ever-inspiring
Martha:
Embellished Package Toppers"You can easily make package toppers that feel much less perfunctory and predictable than a store-bought bow. Grab beads, blossoms, bells, or other bling from a crafts store and knot one piece at a time onto embroidery floss or thin ribbon.
Japanese Paper WrapIf you're still searching for that perfect gift wrap, look no further than your local newsstand. Add an unusual and memorable twist by wrapping your presents using foreign-language newspapers.
Translucent WrappingWith a series of crisp folds, glassine -- or less expensive tissue -- serves as both gift wrap and ribbon. (This might be one for those very skilled in origami!)
Yarn WrappingGive holiday gifts unexpected panache by using leftover yarn in place of ribbon.
Button Gift WrapThis button-stamped gift wrap is fun to make. Affix button to a cork with double-sided tape. Place plain paper on a piece of felt or a folded piece of fabric (this cushions the paper so the mark will be even). Top with a pretty button tied on with baker's twine.
Eco Gift WrapGiven the time and thought that goes into picking a holiday gift, the standard wrap job -- a rumpled bow slapped on a department-store box or a bag and tissue paper picked up at the drugstore -- rarely does justice to the contents. This year make gift wrap that's both gorgeous and green by creatively repurposing stuff others might toss.
Woven Ribbon WrapHere's our idea of thinking outside the box: interweaving ribbons to dress up a gift. The weaving begins with a single ribbon stretched across the top of the package, its loose ends fixed to the bottom with double-sided tape."
I hope this leaves you as inspired as I am about my next opportunity to wrap a gift!
